Global Warming
Global Warming, the Paris Accord and CO2 emissions are topics that are in the news. These terms summarize the process whereby humans produce CO2. The CO2 makes it way to the earth’s atmosphere. The CO2 stays in the atmosphere and increases the earth temperature. Temperature increases have a wide range of consequences.
The Paris Accord is the worlds effort to limit warming. 195 countries are part of this international treaty. The goal is limit global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees celsius, with the goal of 1.5 degrees celsius. The goals of the Paris Accord are unlikely to be met.
As part of the Paris Accord, each country produces a National Determined Contribution or NDC. This document summarizes each countries effort to reduce CO2 emissions. There are no standards or common goals for each country. Thus, the NDC’s are unique to each country. Furthermore, they do not detail actual CO2 emissions which make them difficult to understand.
Problems with the world approach to solving global warming
Problematically, CO2 is produced by many activities other than fossil fuels. Humans produce a significant amount CO2 emissions from these sources. 3 examples include; Methane, Nitrous Oxide and Fluorinated Gases. Consequently, these omissions make it more difficult to reach the CO2 emission goals.
The Paris Accord does not include the burning of biomass (trees and plants) in human CO2 emissions. Currently, 2.5 billion people cook with biomass worldwide. However, the CO2 emissions from the biomass are not included as a human source. Additionally, power plants that burn wood are considered to emit zero carbon. Since wood emits more carbon than coal, this does not made sense. It is an example of structural problems in the worlds approach to CO2 emissions.
The Paris Accord has many complex problems that involve a wide range of issues. Also, it is a worldwide problem that involves all countries around the world. There are many different interests or viewpoints depending on each countries perspective. The Paris Accord is helping reduce CO2 emissions but will not succeed. The solution will involve technological breakthroughs to solve.
Consequently, the Paris Accord are major issues of the day.
